Savu Sea

The East Nusa Tenggara (ENT) provincial government is highly committed to developing Savu Sea Marine National Park (MNP) in accordance to the Indonesian government’s commitment to enlarge the Marine Conservation Area territory up to 10 million hectares in 2010 and 20 million hectares in 2020. This attempt also supports the Indonesian government’s commitment in the framework of Coral Triangle Initiative for Coral Reefs, Fishery and Food Sustainability. The ENT provincial government through the Governor’s Decree has formed the Savu Sea MNP Development and Study Team in 2006 that called Tim P4KKP Laut Sawu, which has the tasks of planning Marine National Park and spreading information on MNP as well as building agreements for the development of MNP. The Savu Sea Marine National Park (MNP) establishment is closely related to the strategy of adaptation to the climate change in the World Coral Triangle area. This area will protect the most sustainable coral reef from the storm and waves and ensure the availability of significant habitats for fish and other sea food reserves. The provincial government will also use the MNP as a basis for developing the ENT Province’s economic development through sustainable fishery and marine tourism, international sea sail route, scientific and study activities, cross-border cooperation and coastal area management. Savu Sea MNP will be integrated with the national, provincial and district spatial plan which will ensure the sustainable usage of sea and coastal resources. The development of Savu Sea MNP is made possible thanks to the support by The Ministry of Marine Affairs and Fisheries Republic of Indonesia, The ENT Government, The Nature Conservancy, the Ministry of Natural Environment, Natural Preservation and Nuclear Safety of the Federal Republic of Germany in the framework of International Climate Initiatives, USAID CTSP and Tim P4KKP Laut Sawu.
